"Mentally" and "ideally" speaking, WHERE is the "local timeline" & which FUNCTION should it have?

What does "local" mean, logically speaking? Ok, it means "this server"... Right.

But for example, what made ME (choose to become) LOCAL to/on THIS server which is far away both physically & interests-wise?

2 factors aside from the filters I used when searching (policy settings):

a) 1024 character limit and
b) cool+neutral name (.HOST)

I would prefer "local" to mean "related" to MY interests OR physical location (profile-setting).

Since I just have to accept any shit pouring through my local channel, I'd much prefer the starting point to be some sort of human common ground, like hashtag usage frequency enhanced by what is stated as interests in each tooter's profile matched against mine (the receiver).

That is all metadata etc., and is probably a technical challenge to implement, but I can't find any other potential to help alleviate ...

2/ Further on that:

Some instances have interests-based (domain) names, which was for example the reason to put my personal tech-focused account @LeeteqXV at the Mastodon.technology instance.

However, combined with policy filters and the fact that there WILL be many instances with either boring/stupid/etc domain names, this will never make any sense in terms of logic, expectations or "conformity".

This is why IMO we should add customizable flexibility settings to the "definition" of what is "local".

We should let all users affect what goes into their local timeline, so that it becomes much more interesting and useful.

Could even provide a set of defaults that we could easily toggle/switch between right in the column.

@FuzboleroXV Local isn't location based, but server based. But I think you already figured this out?
If you want further curation, you can follow people and then just focus on your home TL.
Just different levels of filtering.
The federated timeline is actually curated by people on the server you are on, as it only shows users or accounts which are followed or have been "seen" by the server.
Friends of friends kind of things.

Ah, what you are wanting is the ability to follow specific hashtags in a convenient way. I wish for this, too. (Diaspora has a way to do this, and it is so useful!)

I have mentioned this feature wish for here. Those who replied to me suggested that I request this on Github where Mastodon features and feature requests are discussed.

So that is something that you might want to consider doing.
